World Premiere of Daniel Asia’s Fifth Symphony,
Of Songs and Psalms: A Tribute to Israel’s 60th Birthday

An accomplished and world-renowned American composer, Daniel Asia will have a World Premiere of his Fifth Symphony Of Songs and Psalms with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra November 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2008 on the MasterWorks I program.

A tribute to the 60th birthday of the founding of the State of Israel, Of Songs and Psalms sets the texts of Israeli national poet, Yehuda Amichai and American poet, Paul Pines, as well as selected Psalms. This fifth symphony is scored for orchestra, soloists (tenor and bass-baritone), and choir. Performed in English and Hebrew, the voices richly describe the American Jewish and Israeli experience after the 1948 creation of a Jewish homeland, and the timeless beauty of the literature of the Hebrew Bible. The work celebrates both the commonalities and disparities of these emotional and intricate views of the world through the heart of poetry. Of Songs and Psalms will be performed both in Tucson (November, 2008) and Jerusalem (July, 2009).

TSO performances take place on Friday evening, 8:00 pm, Canyon del Oro High School, in Oro Valley; Saturday evening, 8:00 pm, Catalina Foothills High School, Tucson, ; and Sunday afternoon, 2:00 pm at Catalina Foothills High School. For ticket information call the TSO Box Office, 520-882-8585 or online at www.tucsonsymphony.org.
